Welcome!
About Me
My name is Frances Brandt. I am currently enrolled in the Teacher Education Program (TEP) at the University of Pennsylvania. I am working toward earning my Master's in Elementary Education and teaching certification for grades K-6.
I have been working in Philadelphia's public schools since the Fall of 2010. For the past two years I served as an Americorps corps member with an organization called City Year Greater Philadelphia. In my first year I tutored and mentored 5-8th graders at Edwin H. Vare Middle School. In my second year I served as a Team Leader at Samuel Fels High School, working mostly with administrators and teachers to coordinate in-class support and after-school activities for 9-12th graders.
Aside from my two years with City Year, most of my experience working in classrooms has been with elementary school-age children. In the 2009-2010 school year I worked as a special education assistant teacher for grades 1 and 2 in a town just outside of Boston called Arlington. It was during this year that I saw just how transformational one year of excellent teaching can be on a child's life.
My decision to enroll in TEP is directly related to my experiences with City Year and in Arlington. I am excited to be learning so much as I prepare for a lifelong career in urban education.
